Chernihiv city, located on the picturesque banks of the Desna river, is one of the most ancient cities of Ukraine-Rus' and was second after Kyiv important economic, political, cultural center in the times of Kyivan Rus' (X-XIII cc.) – the first powerful medieval state of Eastern Europe. On an equal basis with Kyiv and Novgorod, Chernihiv is one of the centers of Old Rus' culture and remarkable chapter in the architecture of Old Rus'.
