Chernihiv city, located on the picturesque banks of the Desna river, is one of the most ancient cities of Ukraine-Rus' and was second after Kyiv important economic, political, cultural center in the times of Kyivan Rus' (X-XIII cc.) – the first powerful medieval state of Eastern Europe. On an equal basis with Kyiv and Novgorod, Chernihiv is one of the centers of Old Rus' culture and remarkable chapter in the architecture of Old Rus'. 

A day trip to Chernihiv offers an insight view ofdistinguished architectural monuments of 11th to 13th centuries: Savior Transfiguration Churchthat served as a burial vault of Chernihiv princes, St. Boris and Gleb Cathedral, Assumption Cathedral, St. Elijah's and Good Friday Churches known as the gems of ancient Rus' architecture. Other sights include Holy Trinity Monastery, St. Catherine's Church, Collegium, St. Anthony's caves - underground complex, founded in XI century by Anthony Pecherskij – founder of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. Local historical museum boasts collections of ancient female ornaments, weapons and ancient Rus' hryvnias.
