In the afternoon visit Tretyakov Gallery, one of the most celebrated and extensive collections of Russian art and artifacts in the world. It is located in Zamoskvorechye - one of the oldest districts of Moscow. The collection contains more than 130 000 works of painting, sculpture and graphics, created throughout the centuries by successive generations of Russian artists.
Day 3 Moscow
Today you will tour Moscow Metro - one of the most beautiful and efficient subway systems in the world carrying over 10 million passengers daily (more than the New York and London systems combined). It was designed by prominent Russian architects and artists whose goal was not to create just a transportation system but a showcase to glorify the socialism and its achievements. You will visit the most amazing stations decorated with granite, marble, bronze, statues and other pieces of art - making it look more like a museum than a subway. Later visit historic Red Square, Kremlin and Armory with golden domes of St. Basil’s Cathedral, the State Historical Museum, elegant arcades of the GUM store and other landmarks around the Red Square. Inside Kremlin the main landmarks are three Cathedrals of the Assumption, Annunciation and Archangel, dated back to the 15-16th centuries. Other landmarks are Ivan the Great Bell Tower, Tsar Bell, Tsar Cannon, Hall of Facets and Terem Place.
Your tour includes a visit to Armory famous for its stunning collection of treasures: royal regalia, Faberge Easter eggs of precious metals and jewels, the 800-diamond throne of Tsar Alexey, the jewel-studded and sable-trimmed gold Cap of Monomakh, the coronation dresses of the 18th century empresses, the sleigh in which Elizabeth rode from St. Petersburg to Moscow for her coronation pulled by 23 horses at a time. Between the Armory and the Annunciation Cathedral is the Great Kremlin Palace - the official residence of Russian president. In the evening - shopping at Arbat or Izmailovo with a tour guide. Transfer and overnight train to St. Petersburg.
Day 4 St. Petersburg
Meet your guide at the train station and begin City Tour of St. Petersburg. St. Petersburg is one of the most fascinating cities in Europe. You will drive by the elegant buildings on the Nevsky Prospect, stately palaces on Palace Embankment along the Neva River, Palace Square with Winter Palace and Alexander Column, Bronze Horseman - the famous monument to Peter the Great, Admiralty, Schmidt Bridge, Strelka with Stock Exchange and Rosstral Columns, St. Isaac's Cathedral, Peter and Paul Fortress, Alexander Nevsky Lavra, Canal Griboyedova, Fontanka, Kazan Cathedral, Church on Spilled Blood and other finest architectural, historical and cultural landmarks. During the tour you will visit Peter and Paul Fortress and St. Isaac’s Cathedral.
Peter-and-Paul Fortress was built in 1704 to defend the city from naval attacks; however it never served it purpose. Instead its history is rather gruesome: thousands of laborers died while building the fortress, many political prisoners, including Peter's own son Alexi were kept and tortured in its cells, and the tombs of the Romanov family are in its Cathedral.
St. Isaac’s Cathedral is one of the world’s largest Cathedrals and can accommodate about 10,000 audiences. It was designed by then unknown Auguste de Montferrand and opened in 1858. The Cathedral is beautifully decorated inside with marble of 13 colors, malachite, lapis-lazuli, paintings, mosaics and stained glass made by the most famous Russian artists.
Day 5 St. Petersburg
In the morning enjoy a tour to Pushkin. The town is located 25-30 km from St. Petersburg. Pushkin's palaces and parks were created under Empresses Elizabeth and Catherine the Great between 1744 and 1796. The main landmark is the Catherine Palace designed by Rastrelli. Amber Room is part of Catherine Palace exibition. Pushkin's original name is Tsarskoye Selo (Tsar's Village). It was renamed in 1937 after Russia 's famous poet who used to study here.
In the afternoon visit Petergoff (formerly known as Petrodvorets), located on the southern shores of the Finnish Gulf, 14 miles away from St. Petersburg. The Grand Palace with its lavish interiors, gilded decorations, mirrors and paintings dominates the estate. The Park outside the Grand Palace is a kingdom of 144 unique fountains, all operating without the use of pumps by a combination of naturally generated water pressure and magic. Walking in the parking you will be amazed by the splendid beauty created by a man.
Day 6 St. Petersburg
In the morning tour of the Hermitage Art Museum - one of the nation's main glories. The State Hermitage occupies six magnificent buildings situated along the embankment of the River Neva, right in the heart of St Petersburg. The leading role in this unique architectural ensemble is played by the Winter Palace, the residence of the Russian tsars that was built to the design of Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli in 1754-1762. This ensemble is extended by the eastern wing of the General Staff building, the Menshikov Palace and the recently constructed Repository. Put together throughout two centuries and a half, the Hermitage collections of works of art (over 3,000,000 items) present the development of the world culture and art from the Stone Age to the 20th century.

Bistro is a type of cafe where inexpensive meals are served in an unpretentious setting. It is believed that the word is derived from the Russian Language which means 'quickly.' Russian soldiers in France, after the defeat of Napoleon. would shout to the waiters to be served quickly, thus the word evolved into the neologism 'Bistro'. This tour is short and inexpensive, the hotels are good quality but unpretentious, therefore we called it- BISTRO RUSSIA

Dear Masha and Dora:
Brad and I returned two days ago from our “trip of a lifetime.” We couldn’t have done this without your thorough preparation on our behalf. We cannot thank you both enough for the spectacular time we had in St. Petersburg. Each day brought new and exciting experiences, and Masha’s superb knowledge was invaluable. She enriched our understanding of this beautiful city, its history, and your country. Masha guided us so expertly with humor, patience and advice on everything from restaurants to enjoy and areas of the city to explore when on our own. She helped with shopping and we felt safe and secure in her care. She shepherded us through the Hermitage, Puskin, Peterhoff, and all the St. Petersburg city sights, churches and important buildings with an assurance that spoke of her love and pride in her country. We felt our week with her fulfilled all our expectations and more. We will certainly recommend East-West Tours and Masha to our friends who might be hesitant to plan a Russian trip on their own.
With sincere thanks to you both, Linda and Brad
